Shanghai WIM Series
We were ecstatic to receive our first invitation to a Women's International Match Race (WIM) Series event. The WIM Series delivers a global circuit of fierce competition where the world’s best sailors compete and thrive it is the first and only professional sailing series for women.
After a great training day and an exciting opening ceremony, day one of the 2019 China International Women’s Match Race kicked off! We enjoyed the challenge of getting to know a brand new boat in a new location, and we had some close races that unfortunately didn’t end in our favour. Day one catalyzed the learning of new boat handling processes and systems.
Day two brought super light and shifty conditions. It was a long day on the water with 8 races, completing all of the races for the first round robin. Our boat handling saw significant improvement, however we made a number of tactical errors around the course today.
We had a tough day yesterday in the big breeze on day three. But were happy to come away with our damage deposit and crew still fully intact, some other teams were not quite as lucky. The event concluded with us wrapping up our first grade one event in 10th place. We would like to say a great big thank you to all the organising staff, volunteers, race management and umpires. The 2019 China International Women’s Match Race has been a blast! We are grateful to have had the opportunity to compete in our very first WIM Series event and will be heading home with new knowledge and enthusiasm. There’s a number of people to thank for making this trip possible, in particular the RNZYS we really appreciate all of the support. We also need to thank Bex Gmuer Hornell for joining our team and bringing a wealth of keelboat knowledge. Shakas in Shangas!
