Wild Winter Cancels NZ Qualifiers
The 2.0 Women's Racing team, along with 12 other teams from around New Zealand, were geared up to battle for one of three qualifying spots to the New Zealand Match Race Championship. Our team was excited for the event to get underway as it was to be our first regatta with our full team on board, and Chelsea Rees, our upwind trimmer's, first match racing event. A breezy front blew through Auckland on August the 3rd, the Race Officer determined it to be too breezy to race, and canceled day one of the qualifying event. Day two, the team arrived rearing and ready to go. All teams docked out on time, a course was laid and our first match of the event got underway. About 3/4s of the way through our race a large squall blew through and the Race Management team abandoned all racing for the rest of the day, concluding in the New Zealand Match Race Qualifying Event to be cancelled. As unfortunate as it was to not be able to get any racing completed, we wish to thank the RNZYS for all of their efforts to put on a good event, the umpires for volunteering their time, and of course the Race Management team for making the best of the less than favorable conditions. Next up for the 2.0 girls is the Aircalin Match Race Cup in New Caledonia. We're hoping for a little less rain and breeze for the next event.
